The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Board has rejected Morocco’s protest seeking to have Senegal stripped of the AFCON 2025 title, officially confirming Senegal as champions of the tournament.
In decisions released following the final, CAF imposed significant financial penalties and suspensions on both the Senegalese and Moroccan football federations, citing unsporting behaviour, crowd misconduct, and actions that brought the game into disrepute.
Sanctions on Senegal
The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) was hit with cumulative fines totaling $615,000. These include:
- $300,000 for supporters’ improper conduct,
- $300,000 for unsporting behaviour by players and staff, as well as bringing the game into disrepute,
- $15,000 for misconduct linked to the five yellow cards received during the final.
In addition, Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw was suspended for five official CAF matches and fined $100,000 for bringing the game into disrepute.
CAF also sanctioned two Senegalese players:
- Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr were each suspended for two official CAF matches for unsporting behaviour towards the referee.
Sanctions on Morocco
The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) received fines totaling $315,000, broken down as follows:
- $200,000 for inappropriate behaviour by stadium ball boys,
- $100,000 for improper conduct by players and staff who invaded the Restricted Referees’ Area (RRA),
- $15,000 for fans’ use of lasers.
Morocco also suffered player suspensions:
- Achraf Hakimi was suspended for two official CAF matches, with one of the matches suspended for a period of one year,
- Ismael Saibari was suspended for three official CAF matches and fined $100,000 for unsporting behaviour.
CAF reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, stressing that respect for match officials, opponents, and competition regulations remains central to preserving the integrity of African football.
With the protest dismissed, Senegal’s AFCON 2025 triumph stands, while both federations now face the consequences of actions surrounding a fiercely contested final.
