Players and officials of Warri Wolves FC reportedly escaped an armed robbery attack following their Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 16 fixture against Plateau United, after embarking on a late-night road journey back home allegedly to financial constraints.

According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Seasiders were initially scheduled to make a stopover in Lokoja and spend the night after the match. However, the plan was abandoned as the club could not afford hotel accommodation, forcing the team to continue the journey through the night.

The source revealed that the team narrowly escaped an attack by suspected armed robbers around the Kwale axis of Delta State in the early hours of the return trip. No casualties were reported, and the players, technical crew, and support staff were said to be visibly shaken by the incident.

It was further gathered that the entire travelling party was compelled to use a single coaster bus, as the bus designated for team officials was reportedly abandoned due to lack of funds to fuel it. This development raised further concerns over the welfare and safety of the team.

The source also disclosed that there was an earlier agreement for Warri Wolves to travel by air for away fixtures in the northern part of the country, a plan that has so far failed to materialise.

The incident has once again brought to the fore growing concerns over funding, logistics, and player welfare in the domestic league, with calls mounting for urgent intervention to ensure the safety and well-being of players and officials participating in the NPFL.
