Morocco Beat Cameroon 2–0 to Reach AFCON Semi-Finals
By Chimaobi J Nzoromobi
Morocco booked their place in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations with a composed 2–0 victory over Cameroon in a quarter-final encounter played on Friday. Goals in each half from Brahim Díaz and Ismaël Saibari sealed the win for the Atlas Lions, despite Cameroon enjoying more of the ball.
Morocco opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Brahim Díaz finished clinically to give his side a deserved first-half lead. Cameroon struggled to respond effectively, failing to register a single shot on target despite dominating possession for large spells of the game.
The Atlas Lions doubled their advantage in the 74th minute through Ismaël Saibari, who capitalised on Morocco’s attacking intent to put the result beyond doubt. Cameroon pushed forward in search of a way back but lacked cutting edge in the final third.
Match statistics reflected Morocco’s efficiency. While Cameroon had 59% possession, they managed just three shots, with none on target. Morocco, on the other hand, recorded six shots, two on target, both of which resulted in goals. Morocco also won seven corners compared to Cameroon’s four.
Both teams finished with two yellow cards each, no red cards, while Cameroon committed 19 fouls against Morocco’s 23 in a physical contest.
The win sees Morocco march on confidently in the tournament, while Cameroon’s AFCON campaign comes to an end at the quarter-final stage.
