Grassroots football development in Delta State received a major boost on Saturday January 31st following the official launch of The Elite League 2026, an age-grade football competition for Under-14 boys teams across the state.
The league, initiated by the Delta State Grassroots Football Coaches, is designed to provide a structured platform for talent discovery and development at the foundation level of the game.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, the State President of the coaches, Coach Toju, described the Elite League as a purely developmental project aimed at nurturing young talents and preparing them for higher levels of competitive football.
According to him, the league will help instill discipline, tactical understanding and professionalism in young players while also giving coaches an organized environment to groom future stars.
Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje, who graced the occasion as a special guest, emphasized the importance of credibility and commitment to the success of the competition. He urged participating coaches to uphold high standards and put in their best efforts to ensure the league achieves its objectives.
Sodje who is also the first board member of the Delta state Sports Commission, noted that the success of the maiden edition would play a critical role in determining the long-term sustainability and growth of the league, adding that consistency and integrity would be key to its future as government alone cannot drive youth development.
While commending the developmental efforts of governor Sheriff Oborevwori, He stressed that creating viable avenues for the state government to key key into is the way to go.
The Elite League 2026 will feature 32 teams, divided into eight groups of four teams each, and will be played across six local government areas—Ughelli South, Ughelli North, Uvwie, Warri South, Udu and one other designated zone—forming six competitive zones.
All matches will be played on a home-and-away basis, except for the grand finale, which will be staged at a neutral venue.
Organizers say the competition is expected to become a major feeder system for academies and professional clubs, further strengthening Delta State’s reputation as a hub for football talent in Nigeria.
