Kun Khalifat FC Withdraws from NPFL Over Sanctions Dispute

Kun Khalifat Football Club has announced its immediate withdrawal from the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), citing what it described as “outrageous, disproportionate, and biased” sanctions imposed by the league authorities.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, the club’s owner expressed deep disappointment with the NPFL’s decision to sanction Kun Khalifat FC for failing to honour a single league fixture. The penalties included the forfeiture of three points and three goals, as well as a fine of ₦10 million.

According to the club, the sanctions were imposed despite the presentation of what it described as valid reasons for its inability to fulfil the match obligation. Kun Khalifat FC maintained that its explanation was unfairly rejected, arguing that the league’s actions lacked transparency and showed little regard for the realities and challenges faced by clubs within the Nigerian football system.

“As a club, we have consistently strived to comply with league regulations and have made significant investments in our team and infrastructure,” the statement read. “It is disheartening to see these efforts undermined by an organization that appears to prioritize punishment over fairness, justice, and development.”

The club further accused the NPFL of operating a system that places revenue generation above the welfare of its member clubs, stating that the league’s approach discourages growth and long-term development of Nigerian football.

Kun Khalifat FC said the decision to withdraw was not taken lightly but was unavoidable under the circumstances. The club also called on other NPFL teams to demand reforms and greater accountability from the league’s management.

“We cannot continue to be part of a system that stifles growth and disregards the well-being of its member clubs,” the statement added.

Despite the withdrawal, Kun Khalifat FC reassured its fans, players, and stakeholders of its commitment to football development, noting that it would continue to explore alternative platforms to showcase its talents and represent Nigerian football with pride.

The development adds to ongoing conversations around governance, fairness, and sustainability within Nigeria’s top-flight football league, with stakeholders now awaiting an official response from the NPFL authorities.
