AFCON Drama: Senegal Rejects CAF Verdict, Heads to CAS
By Chimaobi J N
The Senegalese Football Federation has officially rejected the decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to overturn the result of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final and award the title to Morocco.
CAF’s Appeals Board ruled that Senegal forfeited the final after their players temporarily walked off the pitch during the match in Rabat in protest of a controversial decision. The incident, which occurred during the game, was judged to be a breach of tournament regulations, leading to the match being awarded to Morocco.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Senegal’s football authorities confirmed they had received official notice of the ruling delivered on March 17, 2026. However, they strongly disagreed with the outcome and announced plans to challenge it at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
According to the federation, CAF’s Appeals Board accepted a protest filed by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and overturned an earlier decision by CAF’s Disciplinary Board. The reversal was based on claims that Morocco was not given a fair hearing during the initial proceedings.
The Appeals Board also determined that Senegal’s actions during the match violated Articles 82 and 84 of AFCON regulations, which address misconduct such as leaving the field of play without authorization. This formed the basis for declaring the match forfeited.
Despite the ruling, Senegal remains firm in its position and is now preparing a legal challenge in a bid to overturn the decision and reclaim the title.
