The Nigerian football community has been thrown into mourning following the death of former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde, who passed away at the age of 88.

The family of the veteran tactician confirmed his passing in a statement released on Monday, describing him as a respected football figure, community leader and devoted family man. The statement expressed gratitude to God for what they called a fulfilled and impactful life.

Onigbinde, a high chief of Modakeke in Osun State, was widely regarded as one of the pioneers of indigenous football coaching in Nigeria. He made history as one of the first Nigerian coaches to lead the national team and played a significant role in the development of football in the country.

During his coaching career, he led the Nigerian national team to the final of the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations, where the then Green Eagles finished as runners-up. He later returned to manage Nigeria again and guided the team to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan.

Beyond the national team, Onigbinde was also known for his contributions to club football and technical development in the game, serving as a technical instructor for international football bodies and mentoring many Nigerian coaches.

Tributes have begun pouring in from football stakeholders and fans across the country, who described his death as a huge loss to Nigerian football.
