Delta Ethnic Peace & Unity Cup Opens Registration for Community-Based Teams

 

Delta State: Registration has officially opened for the 2026 Delta Ethnic Peace & Unity Cup, a major grassroots sporting initiative aimed at promoting peace, unity, cultural integration and youth empowerment among the diverse ethnic communities of Delta State.

The tournament, powered by the Center for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ) in partnership with Africa for Peace Sports Academy, will bring together young football talents from the seven major ethnic groups in Delta State — Ijaw, Itsekiri, Isoko, Ika, Ndokwa, Urhobo and Aniocha/Oshimili — under the theme, “United in Diversity.”

The competition is convened by Chief Comrade Mulade Sheriff, PhD, with community-based teams expected to provide young people with a platform to showcase their football talents while fostering friendship, unity and peaceful coexistence across ethnic and community lines.

Registration Now Open

Registration is open in three age categories:

• Under 14: ₦50,000
• Under 16: ₦50,000
• Under 20: ₦100,000

The organisers emphasised that only community-based teams are eligible to participate. Existing football clubs are not eligible to register for the competition.

Registration Benefits

Every ethnic community team that successfully registers will receive sports kits, a training ball and hose. The provision of these materials is designed to support participating communities and ensure that young players have essential equipment for training and competition.

Multi-Million-Naira Prize Package

The 2026 Delta Ethnic Peace & Unity Cup will feature a multi-million-naira prize package, further positioning the competition as a major grassroots sporting initiative focused on youth empowerment and community development in Delta State.

Beyond the financial rewards, the organisers said the greater value of the tournament lies in its ability to bring young people from different ethnic backgrounds together, build lasting friendships and promote peaceful coexistence.

The tournament is scheduled to commence with an opening ceremony on November 15, 2026, in Isoko, while the closing ceremony will take place on December 6, 2026, in Asaba.
