Falcons Crash Out of WAFCON After Cameroon Defeat, Face Tough World Cup Qualification Route

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a narrow 1–0 defeat to Cameroon in their quarter-final clash in Casablanca, ending their hopes of defending the continental title. 


The decisive moment came in the 19th minute when Cameroon’s teenage defender Myriam Nyadjou produced a stunning free-kick that beat goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, handing the Indomitable Lionesses a crucial lead. 


Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, the Super Falcons were unable to break down Cameroon’s resilient defence, with goalkeeper Michaely Bihina playing a key role in preserving the lead and sealing a famous victory. 


End of Title Defence and World Cup Setback


The defeat not only ends Nigeria’s title defence but also denies the nine-time African champions an automatic qualification spot for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. 


Under the tournament format, only the semi-finalists secure direct tickets to the World Cup, while additional slots are decided through playoffs. 


As a result, Nigeria must now navigate a more difficult path, entering a CAF playoff tournament that determines Africa’s representatives at the intercontinental playoffs for the final World Cup places. 


Road Ahead for the Falcons


The Super Falcons’ campaign in Morocco had already been inconsistent, including a shock group-stage defeat, and the quarter-final exit marks one of their most disappointing outings in recent WAFCON history. 


Attention now shifts to the playoff route, where Nigeria will need to regroup quickly and secure victories—potentially starting with a crucial clash against continental rivals South Africa—to keep their World Cup hopes alive.


Failure to progress would see Africa’s most successful women’s national team risk missing out on the global stage, a scenario that would underline the scale of their early exit in Morocco.
