Sodje Tips Brentford for Strong Season,Stars in Ambassadoral Role vs Sunderland

 

Former Nigeria international and Brentford cult hero Sam Sodje was back at the Gtech Community Stadium at the weekend in an ambassadorial capacity in the club’s 1-1 draw against Sunderland, reconnecting with the club where he established himself as one of the fans’ favourite players.

Sodje was part of the Brentford legends presence around the club’s latest matchday activities, continuing his association with the Bees and engaging with supporters as one of the club’s former stars.

The 47-year-old defender spent two seasons with Brentford between 2004 and 2006, making 100 appearances and scoring 14 goals. The club itself describes him as an “instant fans favourite”, while his performances earned him recognition as Brentford’s Player of the Year and later a place in the PFA League One Team of the Year. 

Sodje’s relationship with Brentford has remained particularly strong since his playing days. In a previous interview with the club, he described Brentford as more than a football club, calling it “a family”.

His latest appearance underlines the enduring connection between the former Nigeria defender and the West London club.

Speaking on Brentford’s prospects, Sodje expressed confidence in the Bees’ ability to enjoy a great season, backing the club’s continued progress and encouraging the team to maintain the ambition and togetherness that have become hallmarks of Brentford in recent years.

Sodje’s optimism comes as Brentford continue their 2026/27 Premier League campaign. The Bees went into their weekend fixture against Sunderland with a win and a defeat from their opening two league matches, according to the latest matchday information. 

For Sodje, however, his return was about more than football results. His continued involvement reflects the special place Brentford occupies in his career and the affection that remains between the former defender, the club and its supporters.

During his time at Brentford, Sodje played a central role in two impressive League One campaigns and two notable FA Cup runs. The club recalls his contribution to the memorable 2-2 FA Cup draw against Southampton in 2005, when he scored the equaliser, while his partnership with Michael Turner became a major feature of the side. 

Now serving the club in an ambassadorial role, Sodje believes the club can look forward to another successful season.
